Nepal’s Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport has amended the Yatayat Byawasthapan Karyawidhi Nirdeshika, 2060, to allow for the registration of ‘Made-In-Nepal’ vehicles. This amendment is a major breakthrough for companies like Yatri Motorcycles, which faced registration challenges due to the lack of provision for the registration of such vehicles in the past.
Yatri Motorcycles was founded in 2017 with the aim of designing, engineering, and manufacturing world-class electric vehicles in Nepal. The company currently offers the P1 dual-sport electric motorcycle in the Nepalese market, with features such as a 3.0 kWh battery that takes less than 6 hours to charge at home and fully charges within an hour with a fast charger. The P1 has a peak power of 14 kW (approximately 19 hp) and the maximum wheel torque is 480 Nm, with a claimed top speed of 100kmph.
Yatri even provided its customers with the option to configure their motorcycles according to parameters such as color, power pack, performance braking, and digital startup pack, with pricing varying according to these parameters. However, due to legal inconsistencies and the lack of objectively defined policies, Yatri and its customers faced registration challenges for their ‘Made-In-Nepal’ vehicles.
The amended law now allows for the registration of vehicles that are indigenously produced and assembled in Nepal, including those that bring parts and raw materials from abroad and assemble vehicles in the country, as well as those that manufacture vehicles including all the parts. Moreover, the notice also states that a customs declaration letter (LC) is not required for such registration.
With the amendment, Yatri and other companies that manufacture vehicles in Nepal will now be able to register their vehicles without facing the previous registration challenges. The P1 dual-sport electric motorcycle will finally be eligible for registration, providing relief for both the company and its customers.
