Apple Inc. is cutting a small number of jobs of workers responsible for the construction and upkeep of its retail stores and facilities globally. The company is eliminating roles within its corporate retail teams, responsible for development and preservation, marking its first known internal job cuts since it embarked on a belt-tightening effort last year.
The move represents a new step for the company, which has largely held off on corporate layoffs. Apple is positioning the move as a streamlining effort, rather than layoffs, and it told employees that the changes were designed to improve the upkeep of stores globally.
The Cupertino-based tech giant will provide support to affected workers, and those who don’t take a new role will receive up to four months of pay. Some management roles are also being eliminated, and employees could be rehired as so-called individual contributors, but they may not receive the same compensation.
While Apple declined to comment on the matter, a few employees are exempt from the job cuts and will keep their jobs without needing to reapply. Apple had 164,000 employees as of September 2022, when its last fiscal year ended.
Unlike many big tech companies during the pandemic, Apple didn’t expand its workforce as quickly, decreasing the need for major layoffs. However, its peers, including Amazon and Alphabet’s Google, have cut tens of thousands of jobs.
Although the exact number of positions being eliminated couldn’t be ascertained, it is likely very small. With the latest move, Apple is striving to improve the efficiency of its operations and streamline its workforce.
