Apple is set to release the watchOS 10 update, which is expected to bring significant changes to its watch lineup since the first version of the operating system was introduced in 2015. The update will introduce a widget-focused interface inspired by the Glances feature that allows users to view information quickly without navigating through a small display.
The new interface is designed to show as much information as possible, without requiring users to navigate through different parts of the interface. It will function in a manner similar to Apple’s widgets system introduced on iOS 14, allowing users to stack several widgets on the Home Screen to conserve space and scroll through them.
The new interface will be based on Apple’s Glances system from the first-generation Apple Watch, which was dropped in favor of a Home Screen and app-centric approach that worked with the company’s Digital Crown for easy navigation. The change to the user interface on watchOS 10 might be so wide-ranging that Apple could make it opt-in for users.
The company is also considering modifying the Digital Crown’s functionality to surface the widget-focused interface from the watch face, instead of navigating to the Home Screen. This modification will make it easier for users to access the widget-focused interface and view information quickly.
watchOS 10 is expected to be unveiled by Apple at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference that begins on June 5. Along with the unveiling of watchOS 10, the company is also expected to unveil iOS 17, macOS 14, iPadOS 17, and tvOS 17 at the event. Apple is also reportedly planning to unveil its first mixed-reality headset which could be called Reality Pro at WWDC 2023.
Overall, the new watchOS 10 update is expected to make significant changes to Apple’s watch lineup, making it easier for users to access information quickly without navigating through different parts of the interface. The opt-in approach to the new interface suggests that the company is taking a cautious approach to the changes, giving users the option to use the traditional interface if they prefer. With the unveiling of the new mixed-reality headset, Apple is set to make a significant impact on the wearable technology market in the coming years.
