Facebook and Instagram have announced the launch of a new paid subscription service called Meta Verified. The service, which starts at $11.99 a month, aims to authenticate users’ accounts and provide them with additional security measures.
The service will primarily benefit content creators who are looking to expand their presence on these social media platforms. It will offer extra protection against impersonation, direct access to customer support, and more visibility. The service will be rolled out in Australia and New Zealand before being made available in other markets, including the United States.
To subscribe to Meta Verified, users must be over the age of 18 and have a government-issued ID. They will receive a badge indicating that their account has been verified. The service will not be available to businesses, and there will be no changes to accounts on Facebook and Instagram that are already verified.
The company expects to make little revenue from the service during the test phase. The service will be cheaper on the web than on mobile applications due to commissions taken by Apple and Google.
The launch of Meta Verified is part of Meta’s diversification efforts following a significant drop in its share price over the past year. Investors punished the company in 2022, sending its share price down by two-thirds.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook and Meta, said the service is about increasing authenticity and security across Facebook and Instagram. The launch follows a similar move by Elon Musk on Twitter.
Meta has stated that the service could see adjustments after the test phase. The company is hopeful that Meta Verified will provide extra protection for users and lead to increased trust in the platform.
