It looks like Elon Musk is letting the people decide! The CEO of Twitter has taken to the social media platform to ask users if he should step down from his role. The poll is open until approximately 4:45 pm Nepal time, so we’ll know the results soon.
Musk has had a tumultuous few months as CEO, including laying off thousands of staff and implementing policy changes such as the rollout of a premium subscription plan. He’s also reversed bans on controversial personalities and organizations, including former US President Donald Trump.
But it seems that Musk may not have wanted the top job at Twitter for long. In the past, he’s indicated that he would find someone else for the role. And with reports of advertisers leaving the platform and a significant drop in revenue, Musk has even suggested that bankruptcy is a possibility for the social networking site.
Despite the challenges, Musk has made some major changes to Twitter as a platform. He’s dismantled much of the platform’s content moderation capabilities in the name of promoting freedom of speech and has even suggested increasing the character limit for tweets to 4,000, which would fundamentally change the purpose of the platform. He’s also indicated that users will be able to edit their tweets after posting them.
But it’s not just changes to the platform that have caused controversy. Musk has also feuded with Apple CEO Tim Cook over advertising revenue and Apple’s cut of in-app transactions. And in a recent poll, he asked users whether to reinstate Donald Trump’s suspended account, though it’s not clear if any measures were taken to prevent vote manipulation.
Musk promised to make decisions about content moderation and account reinstatements through a “content moderation council with widely diverse viewpoints,” but later told employees that the council would only be “advisory” and that he would be the final arbiter of such decisions. It’s unclear if such a council was ever established, and the existing Trust and Safety Council has since been disbanded.
Most recently, Musk banned the accounts of multiple journalists who cover Twitter, as well as an account that reposted public-domain information about the movements of his private jet after promising not to. Musk has referred to himself as a “free speech absolutist.” So it looks like it’s up to Twitter users to decide if they want him to stay on as CEO.
