The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has posted a notice that a crucial SpaceX Starship Super Heavy rocket launch test could take place next week. The primary expected date of the launch is April 10, with backup dates on April 11 and 12. This test mission will be the first launch of SpaceX’s fully-stacked Starship rocket system from Boca Chica, Texas.
However, before SpaceX can proceed with the test, it needs to obtain a launch license, which the FAA has not yet granted. The planning notice should not be interpreted as an indication of its issuance, and the FAA has not made a license determination yet. SpaceX has not commented on the matter.
According to an anonymous source, the launch license may be granted on Monday. However, the licensing process may take longer than expected due to an environmental compliance review.
The rocket system consists of a Starship rocket sitting on a “Super Heavy” first-stage booster with 33 rocket engines, and it will launch from the Starbase facilities in Texas. The Starship’s second stage will complete a full orbit before re-entering Earth’s atmosphere and splashing down near the coast of Hawaii. Meanwhile, the Super Heavy booster will attempt to land in Texas near the launch site.
SpaceX’s ultimate goal for the Starship system is to use it as a fully reusable transportation system for crew and cargo to Earth orbit, the Moon, Mars, and beyond. The upcoming test launch will be a significant milestone in SpaceX’s ambitious plans, and it has the potential to open up new possibilities for space exploration.
